What Causes Cuboid Syndrome?

There are bones located in the foot that are known as cuboid bones. Their function is to connect the ankle to the foot, in addition to providing stability. If the joints near the cuboid bones become torn or injured, a condition known as cuboid syndrome may develop. Common symptoms may include pain and discomfort on the side of the foot, swelling near the affected area, or weakness in the toes. Some patients notice their gait may be altered, and this may be a result of attempting to minimize the pain. This condition has several causes. These may include ankle injuries, repetitive strain caused by participating in sporting activities, or medical conditions such as flat feet. Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Treatment

How to Stretch the Feet

Research has shown the general health of the body may be improved when the feet are regularly stretched. Additionally, the risk of injury may be decreased, and circulation may improve. There are different types of exercises that can be implemented, and these may consist of resistance and flexibility stretches. The latter is designed to keep the feet limber, which may help to prevent injuries. Muscles can be strengthened by performing resistance exercises, and these may help to provide overall support to the foot. Many of these stretches can be performed during the work day while sitting in a chair. An effective foot stretch is practiced by lifting the foot off the floor while sitting down, followed by rotating the foot in a circle. After 15-20 rotations are completed, you can switch to the other foot. To strengthen your heel, it is recommended to sit down while placing your foot in a resistance band, which may be attached to a piece of furniture. The stretch can be felt while flexing the ankle.   • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle
